Our visit to Number 10 Downing Street
We were incredibly honoured to be invited to 10 Downing Street, where our Chair, Ian, represented Warwickshire Search and Rescue alongside representatives from charities and emergency services from across the country.
The reception, hosted by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, recognised the extraordinary efforts of emergency services, volunteers, and community organisations following what has been described as a particularly challenging summer, with high temperatures, wildfires and other major incidents placing increased pressure on emergency responders.
During the reception, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the contribution made by volunteers and spoke about the importance of building greater resilience across the UK. He highlighted the changing risks facing communities and the need to ensure that emergency services and the voluntary sector are properly equipped to meet them.
For Warwickshire Search and Rescue, this message has a particularly strong local connection.
As a Lowland Rescue team, our volunteers provide specialist search and rescue capabilities to the emergency services. We are part of a much wider network of voluntary organisations that contribute to the UK's emergency response framework, supporting communities when additional capacity and specialist skills are needed.
Locally, this work forms part of the Local Resilience Forum (LRF) - multi-agency approach to preparing for, responding to and recovering from major emergencies.
The LRF brings together emergency services, local authorities, health organisations and other partner agencies, with the voluntary sector playing an important role in strengthening the county's resilience. Its work isn't simply about responding when an incident happens; partners work together throughout the year to identify risks, develop plans, train, exercise and build the relationships needed to respond effectively when the call comes.
We have seen the value of this partnership first-hand. Earlier this year, Warwickshire Search and Rescue joined more than 20 organisations at a LRF capabilities event, working alongside emergency services and other partners to strengthen joint working and understand the capabilities available across the county.
Our volunteers have also supported LRF partners during periods of extreme weather, including this summer's hot weather response, working alongside Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service to deliver targeted water-safety activity in local communities.
For us, the visit to Downing Street was therefore about much more than simply visiting one of the UK's most recognisable addresses. It was an opportunity to represent our volunteers, Lowland Rescue, and the wider voluntary sector, to explain the contribution we make to emergency preparedness and response, and to reinforce the importance of strong partnerships between professional emergency services and specialist volunteer organisations.
As the Prime Minister said during the reception, building resilience needs to happen "from the ground level". That is exactly what we strive to do every day here in Warwickshire.
